Microneedling is one of the most popular and effective skincare treatments available. It is known as “microneedling” because it utilizes tiny, fine needles to penetrate the skin in order to heal and rejuvenate the skin, as well as generate new collagen. The result is skin that is more smooth, firm, and healthy.
On the day of your microneedling appointment, your face will be cleansed of any makeup or dirt, and then you will be given a topical anesthetic to help keep any discomfort minimal. The anesthetic takes 30 minutes to an hour to take effect.
Once you are appropriately numbed, the technician will remove the numbing agent and the treatment will begin. Either a derma-roller or a microneedling machine will be used to treat the damaged skin. The device will be passed over the skin, making tiny punctures. Because the needles make micro-injuries, there is a small amount of blood, but any bleeding will stop by the time you leave.
Microneedling takes about 15 minutes for the face. After the microneedling portion is complete, a cooling mask will be applied to your treated skin for about half an hour. After this, topical skincare products or a serum may be applied as well. Multiple treatments are recommended for the best results.
The tiny needles used to penetrate the skin are sometimes part of a tool known as a derma-roller, but some providers will use a microneeding machine instead. Either way, the needles are very small.
They create tiny injuries in the damaged skin to trigger the body’s wound repair process, which is how the new collagen is created. Both collagen and elastin production are started, resulting in skin that is much improved and more radiant. Because microneedling addresses problems of the skin as well as creating new collagen, it is both an anti-aging treatment and a skin repair treatment.
Downtime from microneedling is very minimal; however, patients should expect to leave their appointment very red and should not plan on returning to work or going anywhere for the rest of the day because the skin will remain red and perhaps a little swollen. The skin may also feel slightly sunburned, but a moisturizer with ceramide can be applied to hydrate your skin during this time.
For at least 24 hours after your microneedling treatment, stay out of the sun. You should also avoid exfoliating, alcohol-based toners, the gym, sauna, and/or hot tub.
By the next day, your skin should return to its normal color, and you will be able to wear makeup again. By day three, you will see that your skin is much more radiant and glowing. You may also notice that your topical skincare products are working more effectively because they are being absorbed more deeply into your skin.
